If you want to improve airflow in your home, we recommend giving a new ceiling fan a whirl (pun intended). We tested more than 20 ceiling fans to help you find the right one, whether your style leans minimal or farmhouse.
After testing so many ceiling fans, we learned that blade span and downrod length are important buying factors. Bigger rooms need wider blade spans, higher ceilings need longer downrods, and to suit smaller bedrooms and offices, try smaller fans mounted close to the ceiling.
To help you find the right ceiling fan for your space, we used the fans throughout the year, evaluating how they cooled us off through the heat of the summer and how well they circulated warm air away from the ceiling in the coldest winter months.

The Experience
Yes, it is possible to be excited about a ceiling fan, especially one that looks so sleek and comes with a range of features. This pick from Dreo includes a variety of settings, right down to the coolness or warmth of the light. After testing it for a year, we'd still wholeheartedly recommend it—it works well and looks beautiful in our space.
The fan itself produced a strong and pleasant airflow, too. It's very quiet on low settings, and only the highest produced a subtle vibration—nothing too jarring, though. We found ourselves mostly using settings two and three, which were soothing and enjoyable while relaxing on the couch.
The Installation
We also found it easy to install, and the design (reversible; black or wood with silver accents) feels modern and sleek. The remote works from two rooms away (we checked!), or you can install it on the wall with the included bracket if you're inclined.

Ashley is using this fan in a 224-square-foot room with a flat ceiling. Thanks to the helpful online video tutorial, it only took 30 minutes to install this Dreo fan.

The Experience
We leaned on this 52-inch fan to improve airflow in a warm, upstairs space, and it totally delivers. We use it on the lower settings during the day and then bump it up to setting three on particular warm nights, and it does a really good job moving the air.
We would have appreciated the ability to adjust the light brightness, and are thinking ahead to how we might add our own bulbs to make it feel more custom. Overall, this was the only (small!) qualm we had with this fan.
The Installation
The directions for assembling and installing this 52-inch fan were pleasantly detailed (which wasn't the case with all of the options we tested). Once we had it up and running, we really love how quiet it is—the highest setting only has a faint hum.
Six months of testing later, we want to put this fan in more rooms in our house. The remote makes it that much better, too.
Meet The Tester
Jodi installed this fan in her daughter's upstairs bedroom. This 256-square-foot room gets hot and stuffy, and the fan improves airflow, keeping the room considerably cooler.

The remote is easy to operate and very simply designed. It needs to be angled just so, but even our 10-year-old figured it out just fine. We also like the white color, which works well against the white ceiling (the blades are reversible, so a wood design was an option, too). For a small room in particular, it is really nice to have a fan that blends in, as opposed to one that contrasts with the ceiling.

The Experience
To effectively circulate the air in a large space, you’ll need a ceiling fan designed for the job—like the Honeywell Xerxes 62-inch Ceiling Fan. We enjoy the easy fan controls, the timed shutoff, the motion detection feature, and the scheduling function that turns the light on and off automatically (similar to the anti-theft function on the Sofucor Flush Mount Ceiling Fan, our best with lights pick).
The Installation
We installed and tested it in a 700-square-foot space and were pleased with its size, design, and effectiveness. In addition, the fan is smart home compatible and integrates with Amazon Alexa and Google Home, although you’ll have to purchase a separate hub to take advantage of that functionality.
Meet the tester
Jenni installed this fan in an upstairs attic room with low ceilings and about 700 square feet of space. While it hangs a bit low for the space, the amount of air it moves is impressive.

The Experience
We love it when a budget-friendly option doesn't skimp on performance—like with this fan. It provides a gentle, enjoyable airflow (even on low settings) and is impressively quiet. Six months of testing later, it still looks so nice and checks all of our boxes.
This fan has a 44-inch diameter and is recommended for rooms up to 250 square feet. We tried it in a 140-foot multipurpose bedroom that doubles as a kitten fostering space, and it was a big help with air circulation—we could definitely tell a difference when it was running compared to when it wasn't. The breeze was felt throughout the room.
The Installation
We experienced a bit of frustration with the instructions that set us back a few steps, but thankfully, it only needs to be installed once!

Jennifer added this ceiling fan to a multi-purpose spare bedroom where she fosters kittens. This fan is perfect even on the lowest setting. And the embedded light is nice when she needs extra illumination for crafting.

The Experience
Small rooms can benefit from a ceiling fan just like larger rooms, but the limited space can make it difficult to install a full-sized option like our overall best. For smaller rooms, our favorite option is the mini-yet-mighty Harbor Breeze Mazon—a 44-inch option that impressed us with minimal noise output on all settings and excellent airflow in the small office where we installed it.
We love this fan's sleek, modern design, which fits into our small home office without standing out too much. The simplistic aesthetic and three-blade design are attractive and functional, with three finish options and reversible blades for each (so you get two blade options to choose from).

The Installation
All in all, installation is fairly smooth, and we were able to place it without needing to outsource an electrician's help. The pieces all went together relatively easily, though having a drill for the assembly is definitely recommended (especially since we had to redo it). The directions do need to be read very closely, however.

If you're looking for the perfect ceiling fan to complement your farmhouse design aesthetic, we think you'll love the Hunter Key Biscayne. After installing and using this fan for six months, we have nothing but praise for the quiet operation, lack of any vibration, and bright LED lighting.
It makes a quiet whooshing noise that provides some pleasant white noise and is a lot quieter than other fans we've used in our bedroom. Compared to other noisy ceiling fans that kept us awake at night, we found that we slept better with this one installed.
The one issue we have with this fan is that it doesn't have a remote, so you need to operate it with a pull chain or wall switch, just like our best modern pick and many of our lower-cost favorites.

The Installation
Installation took a little longer than we expected (about 50 minutes instead of 30) since you need two people to wire and set the fan into the canopy bracket. With the height of our ceilings (9 feet), this meant one person had to hold the fan overhead and stand on something while another worked to connect the wires. The wires initially didn't want to hold, so between that and having to take breaks from holding it, it went a little long.
Standout Features
This fan is damp-rated, so you can also install it in a semi-protected outdoor area like a covered porch, where we think it would look great. The five blades are also reversible, and there are two different weathered finish options, so it has an antique look even when it's brand new.

The exact phrase used to describe the highest setting of this 52-inch fan was "whooshing delight," which should give you an idea of how well it performs and how much we like it. We tested it for six months, and we still love it just as much.
The available lighting colors are warm, neutral, and cool, and when it comes to their brightness, the lowest setting is, we estimated, five times brighter than the previous ceiling fan we had in the room where it's installed (in a good way). If you twisted our arm, we'd note that the installation was more confusing than it needed to be, and that it would have been nice to receive a piece that could cover visible screws, but these are small notes for an otherwise great option.
Standout Features
The included remote is what we use for changing the light color, dimming the light, adjusting the fan speed, and even changing the fan's direction—the last detail in particular is especially unique, and one that we're pleased to see offered. Like our overall best, we could make adjustments from other rooms.
We were also pleased to discover the anti-theft mode, which is not, as we initially thought, a deterrent from stealing the fan itself. Rather, it's a button on the remote that sets the light to a timer to turn on and off every few hours, making it seem as though someone is home to deter break-ins.

There is a lot to appreciate in this chic smart fan. We love the flush mount design, as well as the smart capabilities and overall versatility. You can install it indoors or outdoors, and both the speed and integrated lighting are adjustable.
We've had this fan in place for over a year, and it's still working very well, even after some exposure to the elements (in the form of humidity, dust, and temperature variations). The Experience
If you’re looking for a minimalist ceiling fan with built-in lighting, the Hampton Bay Mena is our favorite option. We installed this fan in the living area next to our kitchen, and we were impressed with how well it helped clear out smoke from a cooking misadventure, its quiet operation, and its built-in lighting feature.
One area where we aren’t completely satisfied, however, is the LED lighting, which isn’t dimmable. It does provide you with the option to switch between warm white, soft white, and daylight for different times of day and different activities, but we wish it had a dimmer function for a cozier atmosphere at night.

Quality: We measured how loud and unsteady each fan was at different speeds. We also documented how much exposure each fan received to the elements (for outdoor ceiling fans) and how well they held up over time.
What to Look for in a Ceiling Fan
First Things First: Air Flow
Ceiling fan airflow is measured in cubic feet per minute (cfm), and it indicates how much air the fan can move at its highest setting. Fans with wider blade diameters are capable of moving more air than smaller fans.
Tip From the Expert
“The higher the cfm rating, the more airflow, but higher isn't always better,” says Lindsay Tan, a design ecologist and design director at West Second Street LLC. For optimum airflow and comfort, she recommends choosing a fan with a cfm rating suitable for the room's size.
A lot of factors impact the ideal cfm, including:
- The recommended airflow exchange rate for the room
- The square footage of the room
- The ceiling height
The Right Size for Your Space
Size is typically determined by the diameter of the ceiling fan's blades. For example, if you have a small office (50 square feet or less), a ceiling fan with a blade diameter of fewer than 29 inches will work.
- We weren't impressed with anything we tested that was that small, but both our best budget and our best for small rooms picks are quite compact with 44-inch diameters.
- For larger rooms (350 square feet and up), the ideal option is a super-sized ceiling fan, like our best for large rooms pick, with a diameter of 60 inches or more. If you have especially high ceilings, take the larger volume of your room into account and select a larger fan (and consider a longer downrod as well).

Consider the Mounting Options
When mounting a ceiling fan, there are three options: downrod, angled, and flush. Ceiling fans mounted by a downrod (the piece of metal that connects your fan to the ceiling mount) are the most common. Most fans include one or two downrods in different lengths, usually between 3 and 5 inches.
Some ceiling fans include a longer downrod and special mounting bracket to accommodate an angled ceiling or make one available for purchase. Flush-mount ceiling fans don’t have the usual downrod and install directly to the ceiling, similar to the look of a flush-mount light fixture.
Don't Forget Your Ceiling Height
The height of your room will dictate what type of mount you need since you should generally have 7 feet of clearance between the fan and the floor.
- If you have low ceilings, Tan says: “Go with a flush mount. We call that a 'hugger' for a reason—the fan is installed without a downrod so it can hug your ceiling real close and (hopefully) avoid thwacking your tall friends in the head when they visit.”
- For higher ceilings, you'll need a downrod mount to ensure that the fan circulates air throughout the room. Keep in mind that higher ceilings also call for a larger fan with higher airflow.
- If you have a vaulted ceiling or a steep slope, like in an A-frame house, Tan suggests looking for a fan with an angled mount to accommodate your ceiling. Several of our recommendations, including our best modern pick, include an angled mount.

Indoor vs. Outdoor Installation
Ceiling fans can be dry-, damp-, or wet-rated, and it's important to choose one that matches your installation location.
- Dry-rated ceiling fans are meant for installation in indoor locations only. Never install a dry-rated fan where it might encounter moisture or even excess humidity. Our dry-rated best for large rooms pick is an example of an indoors-only ceiling fan.
- Damp-rated ceiling fans, also known as indoor-outdoor ceiling fans, can be installed outside in a covered location without exposure to direct precipitation. Our best farmhouse design pick is damp-rated, so it's good both indoors and in covered porches.
- Wet-rated ceiling fans, like our best outdoor option, are designed for outdoor use and can withstand various weather conditions, including rain and snow.
