The type of cotton plays a big role—long-staple varieties like Egyptian and Supima are known for their softness and durability—while thread count and weave can impact how sheets feel and perform over time.

Most of the cotton sheets we tested that struck the best balance between softness and breathability fell in the 200 to 400 thread count range, with percale offering a crisp, cooling feel and sateen delivering a smoother, silkier finish. The Supima cotton composition, the highest-quality cotton grown in the United States, is one of the biggest factors separating it from other sets on our list.

The Supima cotton has a soft feel that only improves with washing, yet maintains its thickness and durability. These sheets are suited for both hot and cold sleepers; we think they offer excellent comfort and breathability.

The material is also treated with a “no wrinkle finishing process,” which should leave them with a pressed finish straight out of the dryer for up to 30 washings. We never noticed major wrinkles on these sheets, aside from the wrinkles they had from being folded in the packaging.

This cotton material truly does feel like a nice button-down shirt. It's crisp and doesn't change textures at all with washing. If anything, the stiffness softens just slightly, making it even more comfortable to lie on top of and under.

The one quirk we noticed is that the fitted sheet is initially quite large, especially if you have a slimmer mattress, so it took an extra wash to shrink the material and have it hug our mattress better. That said, the corners have never popped off, and we don't notice the sides riding up on our mattress either, so the extra depth is helpful in that regard.

These sheets are made with GOTS-certified organic cotton that's also free from potentially harmful chemicals, meeting the requirements for Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex.

The material has a texture similar to a cotton T-shirt, but it's not quite as soft as we expected, based on the online product description. The sheets are advertised as "peach soft," which we think is a bit of an exaggeration, given that they do have the classic crisp finish of a percale weave, rather than a fuzzy texture.

If an overly soft, breathable cotton sheet is what you're looking for, then we'd recommend our softest pick from Quince.

We love that the percale weave is breathable, yet still insulating enough for a comfortable night of sleep, no matter the outside weather. While sleepers who run cold may want one of the two sateen picks on our list for a little extra warmth, we think this set is suitable for any household. We like that you don’t have to wait for this sheet to feel sumptuously soft—it feels great right out of the package. The material is a bit thicker and heavier than your average percale sheet, but lighter than flannel options.

If you’re a hot sleeper, we think this set may be overly warm for year-round use. The material is a bit hefty for warmer temperatures. That said, these sheets are breathable, and we have not had an issue overheating, especially when using these during the northeast fall season.

After four months of testing, these sheets continue to launder very well, with no changes in texture or quality.

We definitely warm up to a comfortable level underneath the sheets, but never feel stifled or overly hot. We recommend these sheets for year-round use, as they do a great job of regulating body temperature.

We like these sheets so much that we'd be willing to pay more for them, given their quality and durability after six months of use. Even on warm summer evenings, these sheets stay comfortable.

While we appreciate the deeper pocket on the fitted sheet (and its actual fit on our mattress), we don't love that we can feel the sheet shift underneath our body as we toss through the night. If you have a slimmer mattress, you may want to skip this set for that reason.

The material is made from long-staple Supima cotton, which gives us confidence in its longevity. The percale weave also gives it a smooth, structured feel. Although these sheets weren’t the softest upon arrival, we found that they loosened up over the testing period, with a notable improvement in texture.

Where these sheets really shine is their breathability. They're by far the best cooling sheets. They feel fresh getting into bed at night and never feel like they cling to the body, even when spring transitions to summer.

When we first put these cotton sheets on our bed, we loved how cool they felt to the touch. Their tighter weave does warm up with body heat, but we still like the heavier weight of the included top sheet. We sent these cotton sheets home with one of our team's hot sleepers, and they did prove to be too hot for year-round use for those who run warm to hot. However, if you're someone who loves the thick, crisp feel of hotel sheets, we're confident you'll like this set. The smooth texture combined with a visible sheen (which is typical with a sateen weave) made our bed look quite luxe.

There Are Many Types of Cotton

While there are many qualities in sheets to look at such as weave type and thread count, your comfort outweighs anything else—and that detail comes down to the kind of cotton your sheets are made from.

Cotton sheets are known for being soft, breathable, and affordable. Not all cotton is created equally, so you’ll want to consider your preferences and budget when shopping for cotton sheets.

If you want the best of the best, choose sheets made with long-staple cotton. Egyptian, Pima, or Supima cotton are all long-staple cotton types and are considered premium for their growing location, cultivation process, and associated certifications.

Egyptian cotton sheets are made of long, fine cotton fibers grown along the Nile Delta. The region's climate and fertile soil have long been attributed to the cotton's durability and softness. Our best Egyptian cotton pick has a silky smooth texture and sturdy construction.
Supima cotton is a luxury, soft cotton grown in the United States. To receive the Supima name, the cotton must have been sourced through a specific supply chain. Our overall best sateen pick is made with Supima cotton.

Know the Nuances of Thread Count

Thread count refers to the number of horizontal and vertical threads in one square inch of fabric. A higher thread count indicates a more tightly woven fabric and can impact a sheet set’s softness, drape, and breathability.

That said, a higher thread count isn’t always better, since thread count can be manipulated during the manufacturing process.

Different materials will have varying thread count ranges due to the size of the yarn. For example, cotton, which has thicker yarns compared to ultra-fine microfiber, will generally have a lower thread count because fewer cotton threads can fit into the same amount of space.

Pay Attention to Weave

The different weaves found in cotton sheets each have a unique texture and aesthetic, but the type you choose is mostly up to personal preference. Most of our picks fall under two weave options: percale and sateen.

Percale sheets are very popular and known for their crisp, lightweight texture and cooling properties. Percale is a favorite among hot sleepers due to its breathability.
