A mattress will make or break your sleep. It’s one of the most important factors in how soundly you rest at night, but given how many options there are finding the perfect one for you can be overwhelming.
We’ve spent the last three years (and counting) testing over 50 pillow-top, hybrid, memory foam, and cooling mattresses to find the best mattress for every sleeper.
We also spoke with Dr. Rebecca Robbins, PhD., a sleep expert, for tips on what side, back, and stomach sleepers should look for. Side sleepers usually prefer a softer mattress, while back and stomach sleepers likely need something firmer.

Why We Picked It
Most mattresses aren’t designed to be a one-size-fits-all solution, but the Saatva Contour5 Mattress comes pretty close. We chose the firm level (vs. medium) of this mattress as a replacement for an old hand-me-down and almost instantly felt relief. We felt supported no matter what position we slept in, and we loved the firmness of the layers.
Meet the Tester
During testing, Marisa, her husband, and daughter all slept on the mattress. They are all combination sleepers; her daughter sleeps in bed "like a little starfish." Both she and her husband tend to run hot while sleeping.
How It Supports Us
It provides excellent motion isolation, and our editor, Marisa, finds it easy to shift positions without much effort. The soft, round edges are supportive enough for standing or sitting comfortably, but her co-sleeping toddler has needed some time to adjust to them. While firm, Marisa noted that the top layer of foam also gently hugs the body.
Another favorite feature after six months of zzzs: how it minimizes movement. If Marisa's husband shifts on the other side of the bed, she rarely feels it nor is woken up by it—that's a big, noticeable difference compared to her old mattress. She's also happy she chose the firm option because it's softened up a bit.

What Else to Consider
This mattress required no expansion time since it was not compressed when delivered, and we couldn’t smell any odors from the foam.
The Contour5 is advertised as a cooling memory foam mattress, but we aren’t totally convinced of its cooling properties. While our testers haven’t woken up feeling hot at any point, it's more temperature-neutral, rather than overtly cooling.
Saatva vs. Avocado
Two of our favorite places to buy mattresses, both Saatva and Avocado offer an eco-friendly product selection for sustainable shoppers. They offer similarly-priced mattresses, but Avocado is our go-to for GOTS and GOLS-certified organic mattresses, while Saatva offers more variety in material and a larger selection in general.

The PurpleFlex is another all-foam option we believe is especially catered to side sleepers. The top GelFlex Grid layer cradled pressure points around our shoulders and neck as we slept, and our tester overall felt better rested since getting this mattress six-plus months ago.
Meet the Tester
This mattress was mostly used by Michael and his girlfriend. He's 5 feet, 7 inches tall, and she's 5 feet, 4 inches tall. They are side and stomach sleepers. He tends to get hot when he sleeps, and this mattress helps eliminate that.
How It Supports Us
In fact, before getting this mattress, Michael favored his bean bag over his old mattress some nights, so this was a significant upgrade in his overall sleep quality.
Even sitting on this pick feels better than soft mattresses our tester has used in the past. He notes feeling support on his neck, shoulders, and lower back through the night. Plus, the firm surface even makes it easier to shift positions during the night.
He also feels cooler overall when using this mattress, requiting less tossing and turning throughout the night to find cool spots on the mattress. While it's not a cooling mattress specifically, Purple uses a GelFlex Grid in the memory-foam to allow for airflow to regulate your temperature as you sleep.
What Else to Consider
This mattress is described as firm on the product page, so some side sleepers who enjoy really plush surfaces may want to consider our best pillow-top pick. However, our tester felt well-supported while side sleeping and wouldn’t describe this mattress as too firm. Additionally, it’s the thinnest option we recommend, so it may not be suitable for all bed frames and user heights.

Purple vs. Casper
Both Purple and Casper offer multiple memory foam mattress options. Innerspring mattresses are often forgotten among the more modern all-foam and hybrid options, but we think the Saatva Classic Mattress is a worthy consideration. This mattress offered that “just right” feeling compared to a different pillow-top design and an all-foam option that our tester previously tried.
Meet The Tester
Elle is an all-over sleeper, and her partner is primarily a back sleeper. They both sleep hot, and their 55-pound dog sleeps in their bed, too, so it has to be roomy.
How It Supports Us
Our tester, Elle, found the luxury firm level to be plenty cushioned while still keeping her spine neutral when side sleeping. She even noticed less neck pain compared to the too-soft pillow-top mattress she used before testing this model.
This mattress also has some of the best edge support we’ve ever experienced. Our tester's partner likes to sleep on the edge of the bed, and they never felt like they were going to slip off at night. Given that this is an innerspring mattress, it makes sense that motion isolation is not a strong suit.

We typically recommend memory foam mattresses to back and stomach sleepers who need more support to keep their spine aligned. The Nectar Classic Memory Foam Mattress is an excellent choice for both sleep styles, and our team member, who is a combination sleeper, even found comfort on her side.
Meet The Tester
Natalina and her husband are both relatively tall, combination sleepers. He sleeps on his back and side, and she sleeps on her side and stomach. They also have three dogs who take turns sleeping with them.
How It Supports Us
In fact, her husband found it more enjoyable to sleep on his back while on this mattress because it kept his spine more neutral than their previous mattress. This mattress is firmer than what we expected, but it was a pleasant surprise.
This mattress has impressive motion isolation, which was a much-appreciated feature for our tester, their partner, and three dogs. It’s a great option for anyone who wants to feel like they’re sleeping alone, despite sharing the bed.

What Else to Consider
The mattress arrived compressed in a box and was left in our driveway in the rain (without a knock on the door or any indication of delivery), which caused the box to lose all structure, making for a frustrating delivery experience.
We had to remove the plastic-wrapped mattress from the box before carrying it inside, but thankfully, the mattress was not wet. While we don’t think our delivery experience is completely reflective of the brand (but rather the delivery company), it does take some digging on the site to figure out delivery details.
If you primarily sleep on your side, skip this option—it doesn’t have quite as cushioned a surface compared to the other options on our list. If you want a softer memory foam option, you may enjoy our overall best mattress, which is available in a medium firmness in addition to the firm we tested.
Nectar vs. Bear
Nectar is our favorite brand for memory-foam mattresses that limit motion transfer, so they're also a favorite for couples. Bear is another champion in supportive mattresses that are firm or medium-firm, so they're ideal for back and side sleepers.

The Bear Natural Mattress is a great choice for people who want the benefits of a hybrid mattress with natural foam layers. Unlike the conforming feel of memory foam, latex has a bit of bounce, which is exactly how our tester described this mattress when using it.
Meet The Tester
Chantia and her husband both slept on the mattress during the testing period. She's 5 feet, 2 inches tall, and he's 5 feet, 10 inches tall. She typically sleeps on her side, and her husband sleeps on his stomach.
How It Supports Us
Our tester, Chantia, has slept on this for six-plus months, and her only complaint is that it's too comfortable—mid-day naps can be hard to resist.
Multiple layers of latex give this mattress a medium-firm feel, which makes it very comfortable for our testers to sleep on their sides. It even led them to sleep on their backs more often than they did with a previous mattress.
Similar to our best innerspring pick, this mattress also has excellent edge support, so we comfortably slept on the edge of the bed without feeling like we were going to roll off.

What Else to Consider
We wouldn’t go as far as to say that this is the ideal mattress for side sleepers, though, because it won’t quite offer the same amount of pressure point relief that other options on our list offer. We woke up feeling refreshed and less achy after sleeping on this mattress, and felt like our hips were better supported, too.
Bear vs. Avocado
Both are awesome retailers for medium to firm memory-foam mattresses. Something we love about Bear, however, is that the site has a chart comparing all of its mattresses, whereas on the Avocado website, you have to do a bit more digging.

If you tend to sleep on your back but want a mattress lower-priced than our overall best pick, then we recommend the Chime mattress. This mattress has all the same qualities we love about the Contour5, like excellent edge support, great firmness and support, and motion isolation.
Meet the Tester
Megan sleeps on the mattress alone with one of her cats. She's 5 feet, 8 inches tall and tries to sleep on her back, since she has back problems. She's a very active sleeper though, so she sleeps on her back, side, and stomach.

How It Supports Us

How It Supports Us
This mattress was primarily tested by our tester’s toddler, but she and her husband regularly take turns helping him get to sleep (and dozing off for a few hours in his bed), so it’s had several opportunities for testing by multiple people.
We can’t rave enough about the comfort of this mattress. The biggest testament comes from Heather’s son, who never slept more than a few hours before using this mattress.
When Heather and her husband share the bed, they recall feeling well-rested and supported all night in different sleeping positions, even as someone with rheumatoid arthritis. Even the family cat loves this mattress, preferring Heather’s toddler’s bed over hers.
The heavy mattress has impeccable edge support, and our tester never felt themselves sliding when sitting or lying on the bed. The foamy surface barely makes an indent with our hands, proving its firmness and bounce-back quality, while the pillow-top-like cotton topper adds undeniable softness.

How It Supports Us
The top layer of this mattress is much softer than the other options on our list. However, when lying down, our tester, Heather, felt well-supported by the structure of the base layer coils. The softness of the top layer made her feel like she was wrapped up in a cloud.
Despite how soft the top layer is, our testers found they could easily roll onto their slides when lying down. It’s also excellent at minimizing motion. Heather and her husband slept through a cat making itself cozy in the bed, and one person getting out of bed for baby wake-ups.

This mattress alleviated the lower back pain that our tester, Anna, experienced from a previous softer mattress when sleeping on her stomach. The firmness can feel a bit intense at first, but luckily, this pick still provides that cozy feeling when getting into bed.

When you start your search for the best mattress, you’ll want to narrow down your options based on type. A mattress’s type is determined by its materials and construction (for example, a memory foam mattress is made primarily of memory foam).
"There really is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all mattress," according to Dr. Rebecca Robbins, PhD, the assistant professor in the sleep medicine division at Harvard Medical School. "It truly depends on your preference for a firm surface or a softer surface."
The most common mattress types you’ll encounter as you shop are:
- Innerspring mattresses
- Memory foam mattresses
- Hybrid mattresses
- Latex mattresses
- Pillow-top mattresses
- Euro top mattresses

Keep in mind, though, that finding the perfect mattress is a highly individualized process. While we recommend different types of mattresses for different sleepers, your personal preferences may mean another type is actually a better fit for you.
Consider Your Sleep Style and Preferences
As we mentioned above, choosing the best mattress for you—one that’ll improve your sleep and leave you feeling refreshed instead of achy come morning—is a personal decision.
Every individual sleeper has different preferences, and how you sleep will determine what type, firmness, and even size of mattress is the right fit for you.
Rollins shares that a firmer surface would be ideal for a back or stomach sleeper to keep the spine in alignment. For side sleepers, something softer and more moldable will work better on your shoulder.
So, as you shop, consider factors that’ll influence your preferences and comfort, like:
- Your most common sleep position
- How soft you like your mattress to feel (and if you like your body to sink in)
- How firm or responsive you like your mattress to feel
- If you like a body-conforming surface
- Whether or not you sleep with a partner, kids, or pets
- Your body temperature at night

Expect a Break-In Period
When your mattress first arrives at your door, it’s the firmest it’ll ever be. Over time, as you add your weight to it, toss and turn, and spend numerous nights on its surface, its internal layers will soften, and the mattress’s feel will change slightly. This process leads to an initial break-in period, during which the mattress starts to conform and adjust to your body.
Every mattress has a break-in period, regardless of type. On average, it takes anywhere from 30 to 90 days to “break in” a mattress. Innerspring mattresses, like our best innerspring pick, tend to break fastest, while memory foam and hybrid mattresses can take 60 to 90 days.
While all of the mattresses on our list did have initial break-in periods, we found that many were supremely comfortable from the first night of use.
That’s partly because switching from an old, worn-in mattress to a brand-new one is inherently more comfortable. But overall, all of the mattresses we tested generally achieved peak comfort between 30 and 60 days.
If your mattress is still plaguing you with problems after 90 nights of sleeping on its surface, it may not be the right fit for your needs. You may need a different firmness or, depending on just how uncomfortable it is, a different type of mattress altogether. Luckily, almost all of the brands on our list offer a trial period (the exception is the best for back sleepers), so you can be sure you made the right decision.
Cheap Mattresses vs. Expensive Mattresses: Price Matters
Regardless of your budget, a mattress is an expensive investment. We’ve tested mattresses that range from $200 to more than $7,300.
Ultimately, we’ve found the mattresses our testers liked best were those that fell right in the middle of the spectrum. Most of our favorite mattresses (including our overall best pick) are priced between $1,500 and $3,000, which is about the average amount shoppers spend on a queen-size model.
You get what you pay for. Cheaper mattresses can give you upgraded comfort in the short term, as they typically have shorter lifespans (and fewer perks, like sleep trials and lifetime warranties) compared to more expensive mattresses.
Mattresses on the higher end of the price spectrum offer durability and better quality, from the stitching along the edges to the last internal support.
