The Shark StainStriker lives up to its name, and convinced me that the right upholstery cleaner can revitalize soft surfaces right before your very eyes, like magic. It made light work of our stains, requiring little effort on my part.

This was also one of the only upholstery cleaner machines we tested that outperformed our Dawn dish soap solution and scrub brush method.

"My Boston Terrier took forever to potty train, and despite my best efforts to hand clean after each accident, there were spots that still never looked clean until I used the Shark on it."

The Shark StainStriker left the cushion we were cleaning completely dry on the side we weren’t actively scrubbing, meaning your upholstery isn’t exposed to much extra moisture (that could extend your drying times or lead to damage).

It's also really easy to use. Some hoses feel unruly, but the StainStriker's attachments easily fit in tight crevices of couch cushions. It does require a bit more setup since it comes with two solutions that live in two separate tanks.

Still, the setup is worth the stain-fighting power, and this is the only option we recommend with a separate tank for pet messes (or other particular unpleasant messes) built into its pet-friendly attachment. This division eliminates any worries around cross-contamination and odors (our best for pet owners pick does't have this feature, but still brings excellent cleaning).

One thing to note is that the Shark StainStriker’s scrubber bristles are blue, which can (and did) stain light-colored fabrics initially. Just let the stain dry, and it will fade.

It makes sense how well the Shark StainStriker performs (and has continued to perform at home for months). My favorite vacuum is also from the brand that’s known for being a reliable source of workhorse-level cleaning tools.

Tip From Our Testing

As proven by scrubbing melted chocolate again and again, it’s imperative to remove large parts of your spill before pulling out an upholstery cleaner. Otherwise, the machine just spreads the stain, and the mess can get stuck inside the tank.

Odds are, you’ve seen the famous Bissell Little Green Portable Carpet Cleaner as the subject of those satisfying cleaning videos, and for good reason. It's easy to clean, easy to use, and portable, so it’s no surprise that this upholstery cleaner is well-loved—it has even made it to our socials.

What Our Tester Said

"This carpet cleaner literally saved our mattress. Our dog has special needs and wet the bed, and I was sure that the entire mattress was ruined, but I grabbed the carpet cleaner and, without spraying water at first, was able to pull out almost all of the liquid. (Yuck, I know) There's no way a towel could've gotten all of that out, so I was super happy to have this!!"

It's very effective on fresh stains (so again, act fast) but may require scrubbing on your part. It's also effective for an entire-couch clean, which we've done several times during months of testing at a home with multiple pets. Our tester has also had success cleaning her mattress and even muddy stains on her car mats.

The bristles are hidden under the suction tool, so I recommend turning the machine off, scrubbing, and then turning it on to suction up the water.

I found that a cushion needs to be fully soaked with the solution for the best results. This can be a bit difficult because, while the spray is very effective, it’s a bit erratic. It’s hard to tell where you're spraying, so you might get some on the floor or walls while you’re cleaning.

Cleaning the hose on this machine is a breeze, though. It comes with a cleaning attachment that you add to the hose before turning on the machine to cycle water through it. The mess empties into the dirty water tank.

Hands down, the Hoover CleanSlate Cleaner is the most powerful carpet and upholstery cleaner we tested. The suction power of this machine is unmatched, making it perfect for households with pets.

When testing this upholstery cleaner at home, our tester found that it’s also handy on carpets and car upholstery, which could be said for all the options on our list. However, what made this one stand out to us is that it truly saved the day after a particularly unpleasant incident with a carsick dog, making it a must-have for pet parents.

I love that the Hoover comes with multiple attachments, particularly a crevice tool that is a total game-changer for small, tufted sections of cushions. The larger attachments are also perfect for large couches or chairs, and a cleaning port on the machine helps clean the hose completely so you don’t have to worry about getting too hands-on with pet messes.

There is one downside: This is the loudest machine we tested. But this is the trade-off for strong suction power, which is essential for tough stains. Upholstery cleaners in general are noisy, so if that's a deal breaker, go with a spray.

DIY Does Work

For under $100, the Dirt Devil Portable Carpet and Upholstery Cleaner is seriously impressive, with suction power that blew me away. It took a lot of force to remove it from a cushion because it attached itself so strongly, like an octopus.

The suction power is only second to our pick for pet owners, but equally effective at removing stains. Red wine lifts immediately with little scrubbing required, and the main attachment has sharp corners, which are helpful for tight edges. However, you may need a scrub brush or a microfiber cloth to aid you in removing chocolate stains from a cushion’s tufts.

All of the best upholstery machines we tested have clear markings on where to fill the water and solution. For this one, however, you can also opt to use only the solution for extra-tough stains, which I did. If you do that, the included solution runs out very quickly. I used the entire bottle for six stains in our test, but if you dilute it in water, it’ll last longer.

This machine also has my favorite cord organization system. There are clear corrals for both the hose and the power cord, so everything wraps up very neatly.

And another similarity to our pick for pet owners: There's an easy-to-use and effective self-cleaning system for when you’re done. The hose connects to a port on the machine and you can see the dirty water flowing through and exiting the hose into the dirty water tank. This process easily took care of the leftover melted chocolate stuck in our hose’s head.

It’s no surprise that we love another product from Shark, and this one takes the word “portability” to a whole other level. The Shark StainForce comes with a spray solution, a handheld cleaner, and an adorable caddy to keep everything organized and easily carry it to and from your couch.

After returning from vacation, our tester discovered that her cats had gotten sick all over her couch. What would normally require half a roll of paper towels and 30 minutes of scrubbing ended up being about 10 minutes of work. She sprayed the solution, let it sit for a minute, then returned and sucked the liquid up to be left with zero stain.

This product evenly disperses when sprayed. The manufacturer recommends soaking the area and letting it sit for three minutes, which we did. Even after letting a stain sit for 24 hours, they still lifted easily with minimal scrubbing. For fresh stains, you only need a microfiber cloth to finish the job.

This cleaner lifts red wine and chocolate stains easily with minimal scrubbing (5 minutes max). Our DIY method with Dawn dish soap worked almost as well, but required a lot more grit.

None of the upholstery cleaners we tested fully removed butter stains from our cushion. For grease stains, you’ll need a strong solution (an enzyme-based stain remover, absorbent powder, dishwashing liquid with grease cutter, or ammonia), water, and an old toothbrush.

Yes, unfortunately, you do have to clean the thing that cleans your couches. Luckily, our top picks make it very easy. First, just remove the dirty tank, dump it out, and then rinse it.

Whether you’re using a spray or a machine, the scent of the solution is something to keep in mind. I found that most of the solutions that come with the machines don’t have a very offensive smell. If anything, it’s a very faint, hand-sanitizer-like scent.
